Ecotourism has become a global label which also in the Chapada Diamantina (Diamond Highlands) in the very center of Bahia stands for fat profits. If additionally polished with the tourism spin doctors’ magic word trekking it’s a guaranteed winner! And: completely en vogue.
Yet, really ecologically correct traveling ends, where hiking boots and bicycle pedals are exchanged for the jets of a plane. That’s the decision crossroads, where our wanderlust gets us in a dilemma. Because no doubt: it’s rather hard to get to South America by pedal boat.
Well, at least we should proceed as ecologically correct as possible and keep our impacts low while moving around. And the Chapada Diamantina, in fact the entire gigantic Northeast of Brazil (Maranhão, Ceará, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe und Bahia), have a lot to offer in terms of natural but also cultural experiences.
